Butler County volunteers are reminded that at least one storm spotter class is mandatory each year.  If you attend a class outside of Butler County, you must present proof of attendance from the National Weather Service - Wichita.

If you would like to view or print out a copy of the Butler County Storm Spotter's Guidebook, just click here.  The Spotter's Guidebook is available with Adobe©.

Just a reminder, please, if you are reporting weather-related phenomenon to the EOC, report the following only:

  • Tornado, funnel, wall clouds
  • Hail 3/4" or larger (dime size, pea size, quarter, etc.)
  • Winds greater than 55 mph
  • Rain greater than 1" per hour
  • Water over the roadways or roads impassable due to high water.

When making a report, include the following information:

  • WHO you are.
  • WHERE the event is occurring (use major landmarks, distance from cities, state or local highways)
  •  WHAT you have seen.
  • MOVEMENT of the event.  Observe the storm as a whole for estimates of motion.
